ABSTRACT

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe psychiatric condition that affects up to 2.7% of the population and is highly linked to functional impairment and suicide. Despite its severity, there is a lack of knowledge about its pathophysiology. Studies show genetic influence and childhood violence as factors that may contribute to the development of BPD; however, the involvement of neuroinflammation in BPD remains poorly investigated. This article aimed to explore the pathophysiology of BPD according to the levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), inflammatory cytokines, and oxidative stress substances that exacerbate neuronal damage. Few articles have been published on this theme. They show that patients with BPD have a lower level of BDNF and a higher level of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-6 in peripheral blood, associated with increased plasma levels of oxidative stress markers, such as malondialdehyde and 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine. Therefore, more research on the topic is needed, mainly with a pre-clinical and clinical focus.

ABSTRACT

The CYP2D6 enzyme is crucial for the metabolism of tamoxifen. The CYP2D6 gene is highly polymorphic, and individuals can be extensive, intermediate, or poor tamoxifen metabolizers. The aim of this study was to determine the frequencies of the CYP2D6 *3, *4, and *10 alleles in women with breast cancer who were treated with tamoxifen and analyze the association of enzyme activity with prognostic factors and disease-free survival. We observed a high frequency of CYP2D6 *10, with an allelic frequency of 0.14 (14.4%). The *3 allele was not present in the studied population, and *4 had an allelic frequency of 0.13 (13.8%). We conclude that patients with reduced CYP2D6 activity did not present worse tumor characteristics or decreased disease-free survival than women with normal enzyme activity, as the difference was not statistically significant. We also observed a high frequency of CYP2D6 *10, which had not been previously described in this specific population. This study is the first in north-northeastern Brazil that aimed to contribute to the knowledge of the Brazilian regional profile for CYP2D6 polymorphisms and their phenotypes. These findings add to the knowledge of the distribution of different polymorphic CYP2D6 alleles and the potential role of CYP2D6 genotyping in clinical practice prior to choosing therapeutic protocols.

ABSTRACT

The objective of the present study was to estimate the prevalence of chronic pelvic pain in the community of São Luís, capital of the State of Maranhão, Northeastern Brazil, and to identify independent conditions associated with it. A cross-sectional study was conducted, including a sample of 1470 women older than 14 years predominantly served by the public health system. The interviews were held in the subject's home by trained interviewers not affiliated with the public health services of the municipality. The homes were visited at random according to the city map and the prevalence of the condition was estimated. To identify the associated conditions, the significant variables (P=0.10) were selected and entered in a multivariate analysis model. Data are reported as odds ratio and 95% confidence interval, with the level of significance set at 0.05. The prevalence of chronic pelvic pain was 19.0%. The independent conditions associated with this diagnosis were: dyspareunia (OR=3.94), premenopausal status (OR=2.95), depressive symptoms (OR=2.33), dysmenorrhea (OR=1.77), smoking (OR=1.72), irregular menstrual flow (OR=1.62), and irritative bladder symptoms (OR=1.90). The prevalence of chronic pelvic pain in Sao Luís is high and is associated with the conditions cited above. Guidelines based on prevention and/or early identification of risk factors may reduce the prevalence of chronic pelvic pain in São Luís, Brazil.

ABSTRACT

Due to differences in study populations and protocols, the hemodynamic determinants of post-aerobic exercise hypotension (PAEH) are controversial. This review analyzed the factors that might influence PAEH hemodynamic determinants, through a search on PubMed using the following key words: “postexercise” or “post-exercise” combined with “hypotension”, “blood pressure”, “cardiac output”, and “peripheral vascular resistance”, and “aerobic exercise” combined only with “blood pressure”. Forty-seven studies were selected, and the following characteristics were analyzed: age, gender, training status, body mass index status, blood pressure status, exercise intensity, duration and mode (continuous or interval), time of day, and recovery position. Data analysis showed that 1) most postexercise hypotension cases are due to a reduction in systemic vascular resistance; 2) age, body mass index, and blood pressure status influence postexercise hemodynamics, favoring cardiac output decrease in elderly, overweight, and hypertensive subjects; 3) gender and training status do not have an isolated influence; 4) exercise duration, intensity, and mode also do not affect postexercise hemodynamics; 5) time of day might have an influence, but more data are needed; and 6) recovery in the supine position facilitates systemic vascular resistance decrease. In conclusion, many factors may influence postexercise hypotension hemodynamics, and future studies should directly address these specific influences because different combinations may explain the observed variability in postexercise hemodynamic studies.

ABSTRACT

A study to characterize the epidemiological status of brucellosis in the State of Goiás was carried out. The State was divided in three regions. Three hundred herds were randomly sampled in each region and a pre-established number of animals was sampled in each of these herds. A total of 10,744 serum samples from 900 herds were collected. In each herd, it was applied an epidemiological questionnaire focused on herd traits as well as husbandry and sanitary practices that could be associated with the risk of infection. The serum samples were screened for antibodies against Brucella spp. by the Rose-Bengal Test (RBT), and all positive sera were re-tested by the 2-Mercaptoethanol test (2-ME). The herd was considered positive if at least one animal was positive on both RBT and 2-ME tests. For region 1, the herd prevalence was 7.7 percent [4.7-10.7 percent] and the animal prevalence was 1.4 percent [0.99-1.7 percent]. For region 2, the herd prevalence was 19.5 percent [15.0-24.0 percent] and the animal prevalence was 2.6 percent [2.0-3.1 percent]. For region 3, the herd prevalence was 21.4 percent [16.8-26.1 percent] and the animal prevalence was 4.3 percent [3.7-5.0 percent]. For the whole state, the herd prevalence was 17.5 percent [14.9-20.2 percent] and the animal prevalence was 3.0 percent [2.7-3.3 percent]. The multivariate analysis identified the following risk factors (odds ratio, OR) associated with positive herds: purchase of breeding stock from cattle traders (OR = 2.06 [1.12-3.52]), occurrence of abortions over the last 12 months (OR = 5.83 [3.86-8.8]), and vaccination against brucellosis (OR = 2.07 [1.38-3.09]). Both the abortions and the vaccination are, in this case, a consequence of the herd being infected with brucellosis.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this work was to determine the frequency of different reproductive phases and to induce the germination of spores from tetrasporic and cystocarpic Gracilariopsis tenuifrons from Chacopata and La Peña,Venezuela, under controlled laboratory conditions (temperature 22 ±1 ºC,12L:12D photoperiod, salinity of 36 ±1 PSU and irradiance of 269 µE m-2 s-1).Tetrasporic individuals dominated numerically over gametophitic individuals. The proportion of vegetative algae was very low.Only cystocarpic algae were collected and the spermatangia were absent.Sporulation, germination and formation of algae suggest that they present a Polysiphonia-type life cycle.Algae with reproductive structures were not obtained in the laboratory

ABSTRACT

In nuclear medicine, stannous, as stannous chloride (SnCl2) and stannous fluoride (SnF2), are used as reducing agents to obtain radiopharmaceuticals labeled with technetium-99m. In the literature, the SnCl2 action was studied and it seems to be mediated through free radicals (FR) production in a Fenton-like reaction. In this work it was evaluated: (i) the in vitro SnF2 effects in different concentrations using pBCKS plasmid deoxyribonucleid acid (DNA); (ii) the SnF, effects in different Escherichia coli (E.coli) cultures, proficient or deficient in DNA repair genes, treated simultaneously with FR scavengers; and (iii) the biological effects of Maytenus ilicifolia, Baccharis genistelloides and Cymbopogon citratus aqueous extracts on the SnCL2 action in E.coli culture. The SnF2 treatment induced plasmidd DNA damages (single and double DNA strand breaks), in a dose-dependent manner. Citotoxicity mediated by SNf2 was observed and the simultaneous tratment with FR scavengers has increased the cell survival, suggesting the participation of FR on the SnF2-deleterious effects. The vegetal extrracts prottected the E.coli cells agains the SnCl2 effects. The components of the extracts could be interacting with SnCl2 blocking its participation in the FR formation.

ABSTRACT

The yield, gel strength, gelling and melting temperatures of Gracilariopsis tenuifrons agar from Guayacán, Araya Peninsula, Sucre State, Venezuela were determined. Yield values with and without alkali treatment ranged from 23.22 to 39.57% and from 16.29 to 22.42% respectively, while gel strength with alkali treatment fluctuated betwen 699.31 and 1231.69 g/cm2 and without treatment varied from 278.0 to 691.06 g/cm2. Gelling and melting temperatures were in the range reported for other agarophytes. Considering gel strength, the agar quality of G. tenuifrons was higher than in other species and its exploitation in economically feasible.

ABSTRACT

Sixty-three rats with previous training in a T-maze, bilaterally implanted with cannulae directed toward the dorsal hippocampus, were used in this study. All rats received bilateral 1-microngl injections 20 min before testing for locomotor activity (day 1) and one-way active avoidance (day 3). The following drugs were injected into groups of 4 to 8 animals: scopolamine (9 or 18 microng/micronl), propranolol (5 or 10 microng/micronl), cimetidine (0.75 or 1.5 microng/micronl), sulpiride (5 or 10 microng/micronl), or vehicle (Krebs-ringer). Locomotor activity was not changed by injection of any drug. However, intrahippocampal injections of scolpolamine (9 microng/micronl) and sulpiride (10 microng/micronl) impoaired avoidance bahavior, particularly during the last five trials of the task. We conclude that muscarinic-cholinergic and D2-dopaminergic, but not beta-adrenergic or H2-histaminergic, mechanisms in the hippocampus are involved in the performance of one-way active avoidance behavior

ABSTRACT

Rats were trained to perform delayed non-matching to sample (a working/representational memory task) and visual discrimination(a reference/dispositional memory task) in a T-maze, and implanted bilaterally with cannulae in the prelimbic cortex. The rats were tested postoperatively after bilateral 1 - micronl injections of vehicle (Krebs-Ringer), sulpiride (10 microng/micronl) or scopolamine (18 microng/micronl). Sulpiride had no effect on the performance of either task, whereas scopolamine interfered only with the performance of delayed non-matching to sample. We conclude that dopaminergic mechanisms in the prelimbic cortex are not involved in either type of memory and that cholinergic, but not dopaminergic, mechanisms are important for working/representational memory process
